The Edisto River is typically divided into three distinct geographic segments: The South Fork of the Edisto, North Fork of the Edisto, and Main Stem of the Edisto. The South and North Forks meet near Branchville, SC to form the Main Stem. The Main Stem continues its meandering path for 119 miles to the river mouth next to Edisto Beach. As one of the longest free-flowing black water rivers in North America, the Edisto River is a secret treasure tucked away in some of the state’s most rural areas. At over 250 miles long, the Edisto snakes through the landscape, from the red clay-heavy soil of Saluda and Edgefield Counties to the sandy shores of the Atlantic Ocean near Edisto Beach. the Edisto River spans over 11 counties and covers more than 5,000 stream miles. Whether you’re paddling down the river at full speed or floating leisurely in a tube, the Edisto River is as enjoyable as it is expansive.
Edisto River Facts
One of the oldest state parks in South Carolina, Givhans Ferry State Park, was established by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. This spot on the Edisto River was a crucial ferry point in the 1700s, owned by Phillip Givhans. It connected Augusta, Georgia to Charleston, and Savannah by extension. As the country developed, and alternative roadways came into being, the ferry fell out of use. The land was acquired by the state in 1934 and turned into a state park. The riverbanks are limestone and home to several rare plant species, for which the area was named a Heritage Trust Site and the park protects and maintains today. Givhans Ferry State Park is also the end of the 21 mile Edisto River kayaking trail that starts in Colleton State Park. Experienced paddlers will be on the river for 7 to 9 hours to complete this journey.
The Edisto Blackwater Boogie is a festival all about celebrating the Edisto River. Funds raised from the Boogie go to support the beautiful Givhans Ferry State Park so they can preserve the Edisto for future generations. The Boogie has plenty of ways to enjoy the Edisto from the outdoor activities and performances from local musicians (lineup pending), food and drink trucks, kid-friendly activities, and more! Activities include a songwriter showcase on Friday evenings, bonfire jam sessions, guided tours, and musical performances by local artists. Food and drink trucks will be on-site as well as artisan vendors. There will also be several fun activities just for the kids!
The Edisto Blackwater Boogie is a weekend-long event taking place October 27-29th, 2023. Camping is encouraged! Immerse yourself in the experience by camping out under the stars. Camper sites are available from Givhans Ferry State Park and offsite camping is also available.
